One of Martigues' harbors, with its boats and small houses, not forgetting the bell tower of the Saint Louis d'Anjou church. In the Middle Ages, three towns appeared: Jonquières (950), Ile du Pont Saint Geniès (1226), and the "new town" of Ferrières (1250). A deed of union between the three districts was signed in the church of Saint Louis d'Anjou in Ferrières on April 21, 1581.
Martigues is a city of flowers, set on the water beside the Etang de Berre and linked to the sea by the Caronte channel. The charm of its canals, islands and bridges has earned Martigues the nickname of the Venice of Provence... Along its quays, especially in the fishermen's quarter around the Saint-Sébastien canal. Known as the "miroir aux oiseaux" (bird mirror), the colorful houses nestling on the water's edge were built by fishermen in the 17th century.
