The Marennes-Oléron basin is a natural region of the Charente-Maritime and an oyster production area of more than 30 km² in the southwest of France, between the estuaries of the Charente and Gironde rivers and on part of the island of Oléron.The Marennes-Oleron basin is the main oyster refining and production center in Europe. It is characterized by its marsh landscapes that are largely open to the ocean, its ports dotted with traditional wooden huts and, above all, its refining "claires" in which blue navicules, microscopic blue algae whose marennin gives the oysters of this area their unique blue-green color, are formed.
