The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus (Greek Μαυσωλεῖον / Mausôleĩon) is the tomb of Mausoleus, a Persian Achaemenid satrap from Caria (Asia Minor), who died in 353 BC. In ancient times, it was considered the fifth of the Seven Wonders of the World. Halicarnassus is today the town of Bodrum, in south-west Turkey. The monument was already admired in antiquity for its size and decoration, so much so that any large tomb is called a "mausoleum" (for example, in Rome, the mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian, now known as Castel Sant'Angelo). Around 45 meters high, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus was adorned with sculptures on all four sides, each created under the authority of a great Greek sculptor; these four sculptors are said to have been Leochares, Bryaxis, Scopas of Priene and Timotheos.
Caria was a province of the Persian Empire that had become almost autonomous. King Mausoleus moved the capital to Halicarnassus, after taking control of most of southwestern Anatolia. Although officially dependent on the Persian Empire, his culture was Greek. He undertook major works to embellish and fortify his capital. In particular, he built a theater and a temple to Ares, the god of war.
