Saint-Julien Cathedral is a religious building located in the city of Le Mans, in the Sarthe region of France. It is the symbol of the diocese and bishopric of Le Mans, where the bishop has his seat. It is one of the largest Gothic-Romanesque buildings in France, and unique in the West of France. It is a medieval example of the Angevin Gothic architectural style.
Le Mans Cathedral has undergone numerous constructions and reconstructions since its foundation. Begun around 1060 by Bishop Vulgrin, it was completed in its present form around 1430, and should have been enlarged again around 1500, but lack of funds forced the religious authorities of the time to resign themselves. Attacked by air pollution over the years, and subject to natural ageing, the Cathedral of St. Julien is undergoing almost constant renovation. It houses the tombs of Saint Julien and Charles d'Anjou. Situated on the mound of Vieux-Mans, the cathedral's 64-metre-high tower makes it the tallest building in the Manche area, dominating the whole of Le Mans.
With 283,613 visitors, Saint-Julien Cathedral was the most visited monument in the Pays de la Loire region in 2009.
