A medal made in record time"The idea for this medal came collectively, and we started thinking about the first designs when the French team was in the quarter-finals," explains Joaquin Jimenez, Creative Director and Head of Engraving at La Monnaie de Paris. The design came to us in twenty minutes," he adds.
To create a medal, these flat sketches must then be transformed into a 3-D design, before the "wedge", a kind of iron mold, is made. The industrial tool was thus ready 48 hours before the final. "For us, this was a first, and a risk-taking exercise," emphasizes Joaquin Jimenez. If France had lost, we'd have had to throw everything away... "We didn't want to start striking the medals before we had the result of the final, so as not to jinx the players. So we started striking at 6 a.m. on Monday morning", says a spokeswoman for the factory.
