Originally a wood-and-earth castle built on a motte castrale, it was rebuilt from the 13th century onwards. The first fortified castle, which belonged to the de Fougères family in the 11th century, was ruined in 1166 after Henry II Plantagenet laid siege to it. It was dismantled and its keep razed to the ground. Raoul II rebuilt it around 1173. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ch%C3%A2teau_de_Foug%C3%A8res
