The water of the Sorgue has played an important role in the economy of this area. Using its power, paper mills made their appearance in the 15th century. Paper mills, and in particular the Navarre paper mills and its factory in Galas, were the jewel in the crown of local industry until 1950, when they were overtaken by modernity and replaced locally by tourism and crafts.
