Designed by Auguste Bartholdi, the statue of Vercingetorix was inaugurated on October 12, 1903 by Mayor Louis Renon. It stands opposite the statue of General Desaix, at the northern end of the Place de Jaude.
This statue has been listed as a historic monument since May 19, 19941.
At the time of the statue's construction, France was under the Third Republic and looking for values in its historical past. And one theme stood out: our ancestors the Gauls. That's why statues of Vercingétorix, the hero of Gergovie, can be found all over France.
