The Citadelle de Besançon is a stronghold overlooking the town of Besançon (Doubs), in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. It is one of the masterpieces of Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707), military engineer to King Louis XIV. The site was listed in 1924, and the building was classified as a historic monument by three decrees in 1942 and 1944. Since July 7, 2008, it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as part of the Fortifications of Vauban, a group of twelve sites representative of Vauban's architectural genius. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citadelle_de_Besan%C3%A7on
