The powerful Montmorency family owned Chantilly from the 15th to the 17th century and carried out major modernization work. It was the family's most illustrious member, Constable Anne de Montmorency (1493-1567), who had the fortress renovated by Pierre Chambiges in 1528 and, in 1551, had the Capitainerie or Petit Château built at the foot of the old fortress by the architect Jean Bullant, who had worked on his Château d'Écouen. In 1538, he also had the terrace on which his equestrian statue now stands landscaped, and built seven chapels, two of which have survived in the park. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ch%C3%A2teau_de_Chantilly
