François Mitterrand, born on October 26, 1916 in Jarnac (Charente) and died on January 8, 1996 in Paris, was a French statesman, President of the Republic from May 21, 1981 to May 17, 1995.Trained as a lawyer, wartime escapee and contract agent under the Vichy regime, he joined the Union Démocratique et Socialiste de la Résistance after the Second World War.
