Notre-Dame de Chartres cathedral is easily recognized by the great difference between its two towers: the north tower has an early Gothic base (with buttresses and few openings), topped by a later flamboyant spire (dating from the 15th century); by contrast, the south tower, with a typically Gothic base, is topped by a very simple spire.
