This token features a portrait of Samuel Champlain framed by the ramparts of Brouage.
Samuel de Champlain was born in Brouage, in the Saintonge province of France, around 1567 into a Protestant family. He was the son of Marguerite Le Roy and Antoine Champlain, who was a ship's captain. He was probably trained as a draftsman and geographer. At an early age, he accompanied his father on deep-sea fishing trips. His father introduced him to the art of navigation and passed on his love of the ocean...
