In the 15th century, the rock, called Cucurlon rock, was a peninsula. It is the emperor Napoleon III who drilled the rock for the construction of a harbor-refuge and a dike. A viaduct of 76 meters is built to connect the rock to the coast. In 1865, a few crosses and a statue of the Virgin were erected there. The statue was made by the Ducel et Fils workshops in Bordeaux and purchased at the Franco-Spanish exhibition in Bayonne. The Virgin was blessed on June 11, 1865, by the priest of Biarritz, Father Casaux. In 1887 a metallic footbridge, wrongly attributed to the Eiffel workshops, replaced an old wooden footbridge dating from 1863. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocher_de_la_Vierge
