Comment

Since the end of the 4th century, Bayonne has been the seat of a bishopric and therefore has a cathedral which seems to be dedicated to the Virgin Mary. When Saint Leo arrived around the year 900 to rechristianize the region, which had suffered repeated assaults and looting by the Normans, there was neither a clergy nor a church left. Following a miracle in the temple of Mars in the center of the city, part of the population converted and the temple was razed to build a cathedral, but it was attacked again, notably by the Saracens in the 10th century. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathédrale_Sainte-Marie_de_Bayonne
