Fairly large and elegant shorebird with black and white plumage, the avocet is elegant with a long neck, its large, thin, upwards-turned beak is appropriate to its way of feeding. It has long pale gray blue legs, and webbed feet. The female sometimes has her eye slightly circled in white, but the two sexes are similar. The common seal which is, with the gray seal, the only species of seal that it is possible to observe regularly on certain beaches in the north and from the north-west of France where the Bay of Somme constitutes its main breeding area.
