Aubeterre's monolithic church is a sort of rectangle, twenty-seven meters long and sixteen meters wide, making it one of the largest of its kind in Europe. It comprises a semi-cylindrical apse with a cul-de-sac vault, preceded by a wide nave separated from a single aisle by a series of massive pillars that change from octagonal (at the base) to square (at the top) plan, and a long vestibule with a parabolic vault lined with enfeus. The semi-circular vaults rise to a height of almost twenty meters. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89glise_monolithe_d%27Aubeterre-sur-Dronne?msclkid=8244c7a2a61e11ec84eae09fcb7e8170

Pilgrims on their way to Compostela could gather in front of the relics, whose protective role was very powerful at the time.
A church sheltered beneath the rock and its crypt, now accessible, must have existed before the vast hall that can be seen behind the 17th-century retaining wall was dug out.
Its impressive dimensions add to the mystery, and the hundreds of tombs dug into its floor testify to the sacred importance of the site.

This vast necropolis, subject to the wear and tear of time, undoubtedly owes its origins to the memory of its troglodytic sisters in Cappadocia, discovered by the Crusaders.
Over the centuries, countless pilgrims have wandered through this place, where the long lineage of cults linked to the earth and the water of springs, which nourished the beliefs of men before the Christian era, can be seen. The magic of the place still works today on all those who visit it.
