Aubagne, the santon capital of Provence, is a mecca for the arts of the earth. Its hills inspired Marcel Pagnol, served as the backdrop for some of his films and continue to delight hikers today. Its earth, meanwhile, has propelled it to the rank of art town, thanks to its potters and santonniers, who for decades have perpetuated the traditional gestures of working with clay...The Water Bearer: His offering is simply water presented in a jug. The clock tower: Aubagne's wrought-iron bell tower, built in 1900, with dials pointing in the direction of the cardinal points. Its origin can be explained by the scarcity of water in Provence in previous centuries.
