Saint-Vaast Abbey was a Benedictine monastery founded in 667 on the hill of La Madeleine near Arras, where the future Saint Vaast used to retire. It was around it that the village on the banks of the Crinchon grew. The abbey of Saint Vaast founded one of the first three colleges of the University of Douai in 1619. After the buildings were confiscated and desecrated during the Revolution, the huge 18th century abbey church became in 1804 the new cathedral of Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Vaast of Arras, replacing the old Gothic cathedral of Notre-Dame-en-Cité in the west of the city which was destroyed. Since 1825, the vast conventual buildings of the abbey house the Arras Museum of Fine Arts.Price
