Comment

The construction of the church provoked widespread disapproval, despite the prestige of its architect, and some predicted its imminent collapse. Work began in 1894, but a lawsuit was brought for non-conformity with town-planning regulations, due to the church's 7 cm thick floors and pillars measuring just 50 cm in diameter for a height of 25 metres. The Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Paris City Administration ordered the work to be stopped, as they considered the use of reinforced concrete unsuitable for the interior of a church. The result was an unenforced demolition order and lengthy legal proceedings. However, the parish priest succeeded in attracting the attention of renowned experts in church architecture, who authorized the resumption of work. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Église_Saint-Jean_de_Montmartre
