Restored in 1999/2000, the apse, of Benedictine type, is the oldest part of the abbey church. The bedside, from the Latin capu (head), usually designates all the walls, windows and roof of the choir of a church. In 1101, with the help of Peter II, bishop of Poitiers, Robert d'Arbrissel established his mixed community in Anjou, in an enclave belonging to the diocese of Poitiers, at the bottom of the Fontevraud valley, close to Saumur and next to the source Fons Ebraldi. He had to start organizing community life by establishing his group. The foundations of the monastery began immediately.
