The Abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel is a former Benedictine abbey, now entrusted to the Monastic Fraternities of Jerusalem. Listed as a historic monument, it is located on the islet of Mont Saint-Michel, which itself lies within the French commune of Le Mont-Saint-Michel, in the Manche department of the Normandy region. The abbey was listed as a historic monument in 1862.
The site has twice been inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List: once in 1979 as part of the property entitled "Mont Saint-Michel and its Bay", and a second time in 1998 as part of the serial property "Chemins de Compostelle en France". Owned by the French State, it is managed by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux.
With over 1.355 million visitors a year in 2010, the abbey is one of France's most visited cultural sites.
