Carlos Menem was an Argentine politician who ruled the country as president for two consecutive terms, from 1989 to 1999. Born in 1930 in La Rioja, Menem was a member of the Justicialista Party and was noted for his charismatic style and pragmatic approach. During his presidency, he implemented economic policies known as "Menemismo", which included the liberalization of the economy, the privatization of state companies and the adoption of the Argentine peso convertibility regime. His government was also marked by the modernization of the infrastructure and the consolidation of political and social stability. However, his management was also criticized for corruption and a lack of attention to social problems. Carlos Menem passed away in 2021, leaving a complex and debated legacy in Argentine history. In the 2003 presidential elections in Argentina, Carlos Menem was one of the main candidates. However, his candidacy was mired in controversy and legal obstacles. Initially, Menem was leading the polls, but due to legal restrictions imposed by the constitutional reform that limited presidential terms to two consecutive terms, his candidacy was challenged. Despite their attempt to modify the constitution to allow his re-election, the Supreme Court of Justice upheld the inadmissibility of his nomination. Menem finally withdrew from the electoral contest before the second round, allowing the victory of Néstor Kirchner, who became the new president of Argentina. These elections marked the end of the Menem era in Argentine politics.
