Uranium City, on the shores of frigid Lake Athabasca in Northern Saskatchewan and inaccessible by land, was founded in 1952 to service a nearby uranium mine. Its population grew steadily for some decades, but the closure of the mine on June 30, 1982 led to complete economic collapse. A few hundred people remained in order to keep the hospital running, but the hospital was closed in 2003. Today, only 201 people call Uranium City home, and most of the buildings in this former boomtown are abandoned, left to the mercy of the harsh subarctic climate.
