Comment
This legend celebrates the victorious Franco-Austrian intervention in Rome in 1849 against the Italian republicans:"On November 24, 1848, Pius IX left the Quirinal by night [...] after the palace had been attacked by Giuseppe Mazzini's followers [...] Pius IX [...] appealed to the European powers to regain his throne. Rome became a republic. Austria, King Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies and France supported the Pope. France, however, was the most active: it sent an expeditionary force commanded by General Oudinot, which seized Rome on June 30 1849 and drove the revolutionaries out for good in July".
