Comment
The child born to George III and Queen Charlotte on the 16th August 1763 was christened Frederick by the Archbishop of Canterbury on the 14th September. He was created Duke of York and Albany in 1784.The inscription on the reverse of this piece is therefore incorrect and presumably the engraver was using his imagination in giving Frederick the title 'Duke of Gloucester', a title which in fact was bestowed on the King's brother, William Henry, third son of Frederick, Prince of Wales the next year, in 1764.
There is another version with un-abbreviated lettering (and BORN with a full stop):
PRINCE FREDERICK DUKE OF GLOUCESTER BORN. AUG 16 1763
