Gold, commonly known as Gold Beach, was the code name for one of the five zones of the Allied invasion of German-occupied France during the Normandy landings on June 6, 1944, during the Second World War. Gold, the center of the five sectors, was located between Port-en-Bessin to the west and La Rivière to the east. High cliffs at the western end of the area meant that the landings took place on the flat section between Le Hamel and La Rivière, in the sectors named Jig and King. The taking of the gold was to be the responsibility of the British Army, with sea transport, mine clearance and a naval bombardment force provided by the Royal Navy as well as elements of the Dutch, Polish and Allied navies. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_Beach
