The medal was awarded once to people who took an active part in the defense of Warsaw in 1939, participants in the resistance movement in 1939-1945, participants in the Warsaw Uprising and soldiers taking part in the liberation of Warsaw in January 1945
By the Act of October 16, 1992, the awarding of the medal was considered completed on May 8, 1999.
In order to commemorate the heroic history of Warsaw in the war with the Nazi invader, the story of the soldier who defended the capital in September 1939, fought relentlessly during the occupation and died sacrificially in the tragic uprising, and also to commemorate the victorious liberation of Warsaw by the Reborn Polish Army in alliance with The Red Army and in order to reward the participants of these fights for the Capital, a military decoration called "Medal for Warsaw 1939-1945" is established.
Almost 136,000 were issued.
