On January 28, Queen Beatrix announces that she will abdicate the throne in favor of her son Willem-Alexander. Three months later, on April 30, 2013, she signs the Act of Abdication and Willem-Alexander is officially inaugurated as King of the Netherlands.
Willem-Alexander chooses to keep his own name as king instead of Willem IV. It is a break with tradition in a family where tradition is very important. Willem-Alexander explains his choice by saying that he focuses on the future, not on the past. That is a first sign of his planned modernization of the monarchy.
