The King Albert I Monument (" Koning Albert I-monument " in Dutch), whose official name is " Westfront Nieuwpoort ", is a commemorative monument in the shape of a rotunda, at the center of which is the equestrian statue of King Albert I of Belgium.
The monument was built in 1938 by architect Julien De Ridder and sculptor Karel Aubroeck to commemorate the King's role in the First World War, and particularly in the Battle of the Yser, when he stood by his troops in defense of national soil.
The monument was inaugurated on July 24, 1938, in the presence of King Leopold III, Queen Elisabeth, Prince Charles, Prince Baudouin and Princess Josephine-Charlotte. The building was listed in 1999.
It is a 30-meter-diameter rotunda of 20 columns (made of bricks from the Yser valley), above which stands a 100-meter-circumference circle. The floor consists of a 2,500m2 cross-shaped terrace at the center of which is an equestrian statue of Albert I of Belgium. An elevator and staircases provide access to the top of the building.
The monument is located in Nieuwpoort (Belgium, province of West Flanders) along the Yser River, at the river entrance to the city's port. To the south is the British Nieuport Memorial (see info at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nieuport_Memorial)...
