Comment

Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee in 1897 was celebrated the great enthusiasm throughout the British Empire. It prompted many Australian local governments to issue commemorative medals. This medal, issued by the Town of Geelong, names the Honorable Sidney Austin as Mayor. Austin was a pastoral expert and progressive who was also an MLA for South-Western Province. He was Mayor of Geelong 1896-96 and MLC until 1904. He died in 1906.
