Comment
Baldwin's of St. James's: The purpose of the medal is not known. In 1880 Pitt Rivers inherited an estate that included the whole area around Cranbourne Chase. It has been suggested the medal commemorates his excavations there and that specimens were left at the site. Alternatively, it could simply commemorate the opening of the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford in 1884.
