Comment
The Institut Catholique de Paris was founded in 1875 as the Université Catholique de Paris by Mgr Maurice d'Hulst. Its seal is inspired by that of the former University of Paris, depicting the Virgin Mary, Saint Denis and Saint Catherine. In fact, the ICP lays claim to the heritage and traditions of the theology faculty of the former Sorbonne.Initially, it moved into the former Carmes convent, but the premises appeared outdated and unsuitable. A new project was drawn up by Gabriel Ruprich-Robert, but due to a lack of funds, it was decided to reduce the size of the establishment and to redevelop, rather than demolish, some of the old buildings. The first phase of work took place between 1894 and 1897. In the meantime, ownership of the premises passed to the State following the law on the separation of Church and State, and was not bought back by the Institut until 1927. The second phase of work was then able to resume in 1929 and 1930, followed by a third in 1932 and 1933. The Anglo-Norman style predominates.
The ICP's premises are shared between the various faculties and schools that have been created over the course of its history, and include several libraries. There is also a university seminary, the Séminaire des Carmes, and a church, the Église Saint-Joseph-des-Carmes.
The Institut Catholique de Paris belongs to an association under the law of 1901, recognized as a public utility in 1941, and now known as the Association des évêques fondateurs de l'Institut catholique de Paris - Institut catholique de Paris.
