A series of 135 United Nations member sterling silver medallions were minted by John Pinches Medallist & The Franklin Mint with accompanying C.O.A. stamp and envelope signed and authorized by the assistant secretary-general of the United Nations. This medallion is issue number 30.

The Comoro Islands, off the east coast of Africa, has a land area of 838 square miles and population of 1 million (300,000 when this medallion was issued) It was a self-governing territory of France and gained independence on the July 6th, 1975 and was admitted to the United Nations on November 12th, 1975.
