Begun in 1982 and inaugurated in 2002, the canal's two independent ferries span the 73.15-meter difference in level between the Scheldt basin and a divider reach (121.10 meters above sea level) to the Meuse basin, which also includes a section of the Brussels-Charleroi Canal, bounded by the Ronquières inclined plane (to the north) and the Viesville lock (to the south). The junction between the Canal du Centre and the Canal Bruxelles-Charleroi takes place at Seneffe. The elevator now replaces six structures, the four boat elevators on the Canal du Centre and two locks, while allowing for low water loss in the sharing reach. It marks the end of a program to bring Belgian waterways up to the 1,350-ton gauge, and enables boats of this size to pass between the Meuse and Scheldt basins.

The undated medal was probably struck for the inauguration in July 2002.
