Comment
Son of engraver Joseph Eugène Dubois and Uranie Virginie Béthune, Alphée Dubois married Rose Marie Catherine Novelli in Rome in 1860. He was the father of Henri Alfred Auguste Dubois (1859-1943), who also became a medallist and sculptor.
Alphée Dubois studied with Francisque Duret and Jacques-Jean Barre at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was awarded the first Grand Prix de Rome in medal engraving and fine stone in 18551 for the theme Guerrier mourant sur l'autel de la patrie (Warrior Dying on the Altar of the Homeland). He studied models from Antiquity and perfected his art at the Villa Medici in Rome from 1855 to 1860.
He executed numerous official commissions from the Beaux-arts department.
He was also responsible for numerous sculptures, including the bas-relief L'Industrie et le Commerce adorning the pediment of the Salle des Prévôts at Paris City Hall, and medallion portraits of prominent figures.
