The South African Women's Auxiliary Service was a volunteer organisation for women in South Africa during World War II. The volunteers would perform functions in support of military servicemen including the operation of social centers, the maintenance of boats, radio monitoring and the raising of war funds. This medallion originally formed part of a membership badge that included a pin attached for the reverse so that it could be worn with the uniform as a cap badge. Each one was individually numbered.
