Struck to commemorate the inauguration of the Railroad from Mejia to Arequipa, which was authorized in 1864 and eventually commissioned by Vice President Diez Canseco at a cost of 12 million Soles. Very rare in gold with only a handful confirmed examples among which this is one of the finest. Interestingly, the transcription of the session of July 30, 1868 of the Peruvian Congress mentions the proposed distribution of 71 gold and 71 silver examples to its members, with two congressmen (one Mr. Ibarra and one Mr. Bernales) noting that this distribution is not possible until the very inauguration being commemorated in this medal is deemed "legal and convenient" and recommending that the aforementioned medals are thus stored! A most impressive memento of Andean railroad history
