The city of Pietersburg, now known as Polokwane, is the capital city of Limpopo Province in South Africa. Pietersburg celebrated its centenary in 1986 and this medal was issued as part of a special South African Mint proof set, commemorating the event. The proof set came in a special with box, similar to the regular South African Mint proof set boxes, but with the coat of arms of Pietersburg on the lid and special text on the liner.
