This piece was previously listed in the Standard Catalog of World Coins under KM# M1.This piece circulated alongside the silver 5 reichsmark coin and is sometimes referred to as medallic coinage. Presumably, it was intended to be a pattern for future coinage but no coins were minted.
A more common variety with mint mark "D" in the left field on the obverse exists:
