Operation Overlord, a pivotal military campaign of World War II, begins with a landing on the beaches of Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944. Thousands of British, American, and Canadian soldiers are killed during this action. The operation begins with an airborne landing, during which it is dramatically discovered that many paratroopers land incorrectly. Despite this setback, the capture of strategic objectives is a success. An amphibious assault follows in the morning, in which tens of thousands of troops attempt to land on six different beaches.
The landing on Omaha Beach is tragic. Of the 43,000 American soldiers who go ashore, many are killed when their boats sink. The German defenders use the rocky coast as cover, with a clear view of the attack. The soldiers on the beach are exposed to German fire, while paratroopers are shot out of the air before they land.
Operation Overlord, from the Normandy landings to the liberation of Paris on 25 August 1944, is the largest overseas military campaign in history and symbolises the liberation of Europe
