In 1921, Parliament passed the Railways Act (also known as the Grouping Act) to combine all of the UK's railway companies into four large companies - the 'Big Four' of Southern Railway (SR), Great Western Railway (GWR), London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) and London and North Eastern Railway (LNER), which formally began operating in 1923.The National Railway Museum in York produced four tokens paying homage to the 'Big Four'.
