Comment

This medal was made after the model of Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828) by Nicolas Gatteaux who has been the King's engraver since 1781. The reverse side commemorates the ascent of the first aerostat on August 27, 1783 in front of the Champ de Mars at the instigation of Joseph (1740-1810) and Etienne (1745-1799) de Montgolfier who collaborated in the invention of the hot air balloon. This day is the first ascent of a hydrogen balloon launched by Charles (1746-1823) and the brothers Nicolas-Louis known as Robert le Jeune (1761-1828) and Anne-Jean Robert (25 kms). A must for anyone interested in airplanes and air transport in general.
