Founded in 1797 it was named for Saint Ferdinand and San Fernando Valley. At its peak over 1000 of the Tongva Indian trot lived and worked in the fields, orchards in livestock. In 1842, a worker discovered gold particles attach to roots. This started the 1st gold rush to Alta California. For years after a common treasure seekers dug up the walls and floors to find gold they thought the padres had hidden. In 1845, the mission buildings were secularized and sold. It was used as a stage coach station, warehouse and a hog farm. It was restored in 1940, destroyed by earthquake in 1971 and completed again 1974. The mission is still in use as a chapel.
