Wurzb. 6206Born in Sebaste, Armenia, the eponymous Mekhitar established the Order in the Venetian territory of Morea in 1701. With the outbreak of hostilities between Venice and the Sublime Porte, the Order moved to Venice, where it was bequeathed the island of San Lazzaro. From there, the Mekhitarist Order became a major contributor in the modern Armenian Literature movement. Mekhitar died on San Lazzaro in 1749, and the island to this date remains the headquarters of his Order.
