Comment

The Marshal of the Conclave was a high lay papal dignitary, perpetual keeper of the Conclave.
He had the function of supervising the Cardinals cloister, gathered in conclave, and attending to the custody and defense of them.
The Marshal had the task of closing the Conclave door keeping the key always with him, closed in a purple velvet bag.
The office was hereditary. Initially it was for the Roman family of Savelli, then after their extintion, it was the Chigi family that carried on the task until its suppression in 1966 by Pope Paul VI.
