The island is surrounded by three different water ways. North and north east is the Napa river. To the south east is the Carquinez Strait. To the south west is San Pablo Bay.Just north of the San Francisco Bay. Before the Causeway was built people had to travel by boat to get to the island. They had their own Ferry service. There are tokens you can find for sale that were used on that Ferry. Eventually they ended all ferry service to the island. The Island was the first Pacific Coast navel base. It was purchased by the navy on 4 January 1853.Several major ships and submarines were built at the island. It closed at the end of the 20 century. It Has been repurposed for many other activities now. There are two photos here. Upper photo is closer view of causeway, the Lower view shows the how the waters are different. Top of narrow channel is the location of the causeway on the Napa river.
