**This coin is part of the original 300 minted**

Preceeding the Magna Carta by 15 years, Ipswich's Royal Charter granted by King John in 1200 AD is one of the Oldest Royal town charters in England's history. It liberated the people of the town, allowing them to elect 2 bailiffs to operate in their interests; 4 Coroners and 12 Portmen. It also allowed the formation of one of the country's first merchants gilds to organise trade.

On the 25th of May 2000, it was the 800th anniversary of such an occasion and in commemorative fashion, bronze-like medals were struck.

These were struck initially as a limited edition of 300 with hyphens between the words as depicted.

The hyphenated original 300 are as follows on the reverse:

 THE SEAL OF KING JOHN

 REIGNED 1199 - 1216
