Comment
This is the official coronation medal.
The original number ordered by the Council was 1700 specimens in silver being made up of 1200 to be distributed on coronation day and 500 to members of the House of Commons. This order was replaced by one dated 17th September 1761 and the quantity reduced to 800 for distribution on Coronation Day; the members of the House of Commons being given gold specimens. Presumably Natter encountered difficulty in striking a sufficient quantity of medals from the dies for the gold specimens since he found it necessary to engrave new ones to strike the silver. No official order was given for copper specimens to be struck. A possible reason for their existence may be that they were for the engraver's own use since they are considerably rarer than the silver. A number of crude copies in copper exist of this medal; presumably they were made for sale to the populace. (Brown)
