Comment
This is the legend where Khan Kubrat, Ruler of Old Great Bulgaria gathered all his sons and assembled sticks into a bundle. He asked them one by one to try to break the bundle and none could. He then told them that if the brothers (Asparuh, Kuber, Batbayan, Kotrag, Alcek) remain united, they will be hard to break, just like the bundle of sticks. But if they are not united, they will be broken one by one, just like the sticks one by one. As history tells us, only Asparuh, Kotrag and Kuber were successful. Asparuh founded the First Bulgarian Empire, Volga Bulgaria was founded by Kotrag and Kuber managed to rule part of nowadays Northern Macedonia before uniting with the First Bulgarian Empire later on. The other brothers perishedAlcek and his people were killed in Italy by the Lombards
Batbayan became a vassal to the Khazars and perished trying to liberate Old Great Bulgaria, to no avail
